Rollers, wheels and polyurethane parts for food processing, pharma and cosmetics

Frequent washdowns, greasy, hot, sugary or sticky products, high line speeds, the risk of marking or contamination: here the choice of cover is critical. We cover rollers and wheels in rubber or polyurethane and we make cast PU parts — with food grades meeting the FDA references, technical data sheet and material certificate supplied.

Two constraints at the same time: hygiene and production

A roller or a wear part has to withstand contact with the product, frequent washdowns and their chemicals (hot water, caustics, chlorinated agents, peracetic acid), the temperature, the fats, the sugars, the abrasion and the line speed — without marking, contaminating or degrading.

At Soremag, we cover, grind and groove rollers and wheels in rubber or polyurethane, we repair the journals and we make cast polyurethane parts. We work in FDA food grades. The compound is chosen from the food, the temperature and the cleaning chemistry.

The segments we serve

Transformation

Food processing (washdown)

Conveying, transfer, nip, guiding; washdown-ready design for lines that are cleaned frequently.

Boulangerie

Bakery & pastry

Dough laminating (sheeting), gauging, molding, enrobing; release and temperature resistance.

Embouteillage

Bottling & packaging

Star wheels, capping bushings, guides, pucks and polyurethane wear parts.

Pharma & cosmétique

Packaging

Filling, labeling, guiding, transfer; non-marking rollers, resistance to alcohols and solvents.

Lavage / washdown

Hygiene & cleaning

Materials chosen for hot water, steam, caustics and chlorinated/peracetic agents (CIP depending on the equipment).

Typical uses where our solutions make a difference

The rollers, wheels and parts we come across

Conveying / transfer rollers (washdown)

Washable surface, non-marking, resistant to washdown cycles.

Drive, nip & pinch rollers

Controlled grip, without marking sensitive products.

Dough laminating & molding rollers (sheeting)

Consistency and release depending on the material and the finish.

Enrobing rollers

Consistent transfer (chocolate, icing, coatings).

Labeling / gluing rollers

Pharma, cosmetics, containers — a stable surface.

Star wheels, bushings, guides, pucks (bottling)

Molded Parts polyurethane; timing screws on request.

Cast polyurethane parts & wear parts

Guides, cleats, pads, suction cups; reverse engineering when the OEM part is unavailable.

Sleeves (sleeves)

Fast replacement on the existing shaft, when the assembly allows it.

Sélection des matériaux

The right food-contact grade for each zone

Direct or indirect contact, type of food, temperature, dwell time and cleaning chemistry.

Here,

three materials stand out
— and what separates them is what touches the roller: washdown water, fat, or hot sticky product. The other three families fill in depending on the part.

White EPDM

The washdown champion

Hot water, light steam, alkaline and chlorinated agents don't faze it.

Its one weakness: oils and greases.

White nitrileNBR

As soon as there is fat

Comfortable with oils, food greases and dairy products.

Less durable in prolonged very hot steam.

FDA-grade siliconeVMQ

Hot, sugary or sticky product

Release and heat resistance — think bakery.

Low abrasion and cut resistance.

Polyether urethane

Star wheels, guides, bushings

High abrasion resistance and good tolerance for moisture.

The right answer to hot washdown, where the ester hydrolyzes.

Polyester urethane

Severe dry abrasion

Sugar, salt, grain — the wear of dry abrasive products.

Avoid in hot wet service — hydrolysis.

NeopreneCR

Case by case

An all-rounder: moderate oil, weathering, flame resistance.

Chosen when none of the other five families makes itself obvious.

FDA compliance

Our food grades are formulated from compounds meeting the FDA references —

21 CFR 177.2600
for rubber,
177.1680
for polyurethane resins.

Technical data sheet and material certificate supplied with the part. In hot wet washdown, avoid polyester urethane:

EPDM or polyether urethane
.

Exemple terrain — lavage chaud quotidien

On a line washed hot several times a day (caustic soda + peracetic acid), a drive roller softens and leaves marks. We validate the

washdown chemistry, the concentration, the temperature and the contact time
, then we recover with a
food grade EPDM
that holds up to hot water, caustic soda and chlorine: a clean, non-marking surface and washdown cycles without degradation.

What we measure and validate:
hardness (Shore A / D), surface finish (Ra), runout (TIR), cylindricity, profile / crown, dynamic balancing, condition of the journals, adhesion of the cover to the core, chemical and washdown compatibility (sample test), and food contact compliance per the data sheet.

Frequently asked questions — food, pharma & cosmetics

Do you offer food contact rollers? +

Yes. We offer rubber and polyurethane covers in food grade, formulated from compounds meeting the FDA references —

21 CFR 177.2600
for rubber,
177.1680
for polyurethane resins.
Technical data sheet and material certificate supplied with the part.

Do your covers stand up to frequent washdowns? +

Yes, if the material is chosen for the right chemistry.

EPDM
stands up to hot water, steam, caustics and chlorinated agents; we validate concentration, temperature and frequency. Ester PU is to be avoided in hot wet service.

Which material for greasy products? +

Often a

white nitrile (NBR)
in a food grade, compatible with oils and fats. The final choice depends on the product, the cleaning and the temperature.

Which material for hot or sticky products? +

A

Silicone
in a food grade is often a good candidate (release, temperature). It reduces sticking when material, hardness and finish are right, but it resists abrasion less well.

Do you make blue or metal detectable compounds? +

On request, we can evaluate blue compounds, visually detectable or metal / X-ray detectable — depending on material availability, hardness, geometry and validation on your detectors.

Do you make polyurethane bottling parts? +

Yes, within our scope: cast polyurethane part, wheel, guide, bushing, pad, puck or wear part to be reproduced. For timing screws (often machined rigid plastic), talk to us about it.

Are your rollers non-marking? +

Yes — we choose a non-marking compound and we adjust hardness, surface and pressure for sensitive products.

My bearing journals are damaged: do I have to scrap the roller? +

Not necessarily. We can repair, build up and remachine the journals before recovering, if the base is salvageable.

Can you remake a part if the OEM one is not available? +

Yes. Through reverse engineering, we remake wheels, guides, bushings, pads and cast polyurethane parts from a sample or from drawings.

A roller that marks, degrades in washdown, or a polyurethane part to remake?

Talk to a Soremag expert: we validate product contact, washdown, temperature, hardness and material before recommending a cover or a custom polyurethane part. Service in Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes, with shipping available.
